Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Gules, on a fess Or double-pierced by five arrows palewise counterchanged, a vol Sable.  Attached below and to the sides of the shield a Gold scroll inscribed SAGITTAE JUSTAE IRAE in Black letters.

Symbolism
Red and yellow are used for Artillery.  The fess and wings pierced by the arrow allude to the nature and mission of the Battalion, the number of arrows referring to the five battle honors awarded the Battalion during World War II.  The motto translates to Arrows of Just Vengeance.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 25 August 1954.  It was amended to correct the spelling of the motto on 28 April 1955.
